A third major project in the lab concerns the mechanism by which the endoplasmic reticulum adopts its characteristic shape. Lipid interaction of the C terminus and association of the transmembrane segments facilitate atlastin-mediated homotypic endoplasmic reticulum fusion. For example, our research addresses how growth factors are secreted from cells and how tyrosine kinases are integrated into membranes. Our current efforts are directed towards further elucidation of the molecular mechanism of the ERAD pathways using reconstituted systems with purified components.
